Dr. Sam grew up in Vandergrift, a small town northeast of Pittsburgh. He received his undergraduate degree from Bucknell University and his dental degree from Temple University in 1977. He and Dr. Schmoyer were in the same class! After dental school he served three years in the Navy Dental Corp at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base. He began private practice in Chesapeake, VA, while his wife attended graduate school. Then in 1981 he partnered with Dr. Schmoyer to form Penn’s Commons Dental Group.
Dr. Sam’s wife, Jan, is on the faculty of the School of Dental Hygiene of Harcum College. They have two daughters, Lauren and Emily. Lauren is an Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas. Emily is a nurse at Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE. She and her husband Dean have a son Wyatt and a daughter Charlotte.
Dr. Sam is an avid water sports enthusiast, especially waterskiing in the slalom course. He has been a life-long runner, but in recent years has pursued triathlons. WW II history is a passion for him as a result of his father’s and father-in-law’s service in the Pacific theater. Dr. Sam enjoys dentistry for its relationships with the people he serves.
